Located in the heart of Elvas’ historic city centre, between the walls next to the western bulwark of the for-tress, it benefits from a unique environment.
As an example of eighteenth-century architecture, this property of the Order of Saint Paul started being built in 1679 and was completed in 1721.
The church remained in possession of the Brotherhood of the Third Order of São Domingos until 1886 and, in the following year, was given to the Elvas Cavalry Regiment, which installed the military court therein. Be-sides that purpose, it was also a barracks and detention house.
It was unoccupied and in a state of advanced degradation since 2004. The Vila Galé Collection Elvas – Histor-ic Hotel, Conference & Spa opened in 2019, following the recovery and reconversion of the ancient São Pau-lo Convent.
