Francisco de Freitas Gazul was born in Lisbon in 1842. He was a Portuguese dramatic composer and musicologist, and a teacher at the National Conservatory of Lisbon.
With an Italian influence, he dedicated himself to the composition of theatre music, and wrote the score for the operatic version of the drama Frei Luís de Sousa, by Almeida Garrett.
His musical work is divided into the genres of revue and operetta, but he also wrote pieces of liturgical music intended to be performed in churches during religious ceremonies. He published several didactic works for Conservatory students.
He passed away in 1925 at the age of 82. He has a street named after him in Campo de Ourique, Lisbon, since 1958.
