“At the steepest and most inaccessible point of the São Mamede mountain range, in the district of Portalegre, in the heart of the natural park, we find one of the castles that offers breath-taking views: the Marvão Castle.
Marvão was conquered from the Muslims by King Afonso Henriques and, in 1190, it was reconquered again by the Moors. Later, in 1226, King Sancho I gave the population one of the first royal charters in Alentejo and, three years later, King Dinis took possession of the Marvão Castle, which, after expansion and military rebuilding, gained great importance in the wars against the Spanish troops. Built on a rocky platform, the Marvão Castle encloses the medieval town within its walls.
Excellently preserved, it can be considered a paradigm of the history of most of the fortresses in Alentejo. It has been classified as a National Monument since 1922.”
