“Classified as a National Monument since 1910, it is one of the most complete examples of medieval military architecture in the country. It dates back to 1194, the year in which King Sancho I donated the so-called lands of Guidintesta to Afonso Pães, prior of the Order, with the precept to build a castle, which the monarch called Belver.
The Order’s knowledge of advanced military architecture, with which it was very familiar through its many previous experiences, enabled it to build an extremely well-designed fortress. Circular in shape, it preserves the walls, partly embattled and with the remains of the turrets that used to encircle its perimeter. The entrance door is from the 15th century, with a round arch. Located in Gavião, the fortress has undergone some modifications over the centuries but has kept its original structure almost intact. The view from the highest point of the castle is an absolute must and its beauty will remain in the memory of every visitor.”
