John Singer Sargent

John Singer Sargent, of American descent, was born on 12 January 1856 in Florence, Italy. Recognised as one of the greatest portrait painters of his time, Sargent stood out for his technical skill and his ability to capture the personality and essence of his models. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, where he was influenced by artists such as Carolus-Duran and the Impressionists.

Sargent is famous for his portraits of high society, including prominent figures from the European and American aristocracy. Works such as “Madame X” and “The Portrait of Lady Agnew” are examples of his mastery in capturing light, texture and elegance.

As well as portraits, Sargent also explored landscapes and genre scenes, using loose brushstrokes and a vibrant palette. Throughout his career, he received numerous awards and recognition, becoming an influential figure in the art world.

He died on 14 April 1925 in London. Today, John Singer Sargent is celebrated as one of the great masters of painting, whose works continue to be admired for their extraordinary technique.
