Colin Campbell Cooper

Colin Campbell Cooper was born on 8 March 1856 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States of America. He was an American painter and watercolourist known for his urban and rural landscapes, often with a strong impressionist influence. Cooper studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and later at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was exposed to new techniques and styles.

Throughout his career, Cooper stood out for his ability to capture light and atmosphere in his work. He has portrayed architectural buildings, especially skyscrapers in New York and São Francisco, as well as California landscapes. His compositions are characterised by vibrant colours and careful attention to detail.

Cooper was also an advocate of outdoor art and one of the founders of the California Art Club, promoting en plein air painting among the region’s artists. He died in 1937, and today, Colin Campbell Cooper is remembered for his contribution to American art and his depictions of his surroundings.
