Pierre Bonnard

Pierre Bonnard was born on 3 October 1867 in Fontenay-aux-Roses, France. He was a painter and engraver associated with the Nabis Group, which sought to unite art with spirituality and emotion. Bonnard studied at the Julian Academy and developed a unique style characterised by vibrant colours, intimate compositions and an innovative approach to light.

His works depict scenes from everyday life, landscapes and the human figure, and he is best known for his depictions of interiors and his wife, Marthe. Bonnard used light and luminous colours, which gave his compositions an almost pictorial quality.

Throughout his career, Bonnard experimented with printing and colour, exploring the possibilities of light and shadow. He died on 23 January 1947 in Le Cannet. Today, Pierre Bonnard is remembered as a master of modern painting, whose works continue to be appreciated for their sensitivity and expressiveness.
