Pál Szinyei Merse was born on 4 July 1845 in Slovakia and is recognised as one of the leading Hungarian painters of the 19th century, associated with Impressionism. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he was influenced by contemporary artists and the European Impressionist movement.
Szinyei is most famous for his work Lady in Violet (1874), which exemplifies his ability to capture light and colour. This painting has become an icon of Hungarian art and reflects his innovative approach, combining elements of realism and impressionism. As well as portraits, Szinyei also excelled at painting landscapes and scenes of rural life.
He was an advocate of modern art and worked as a teacher, contributing to the education of many Hungarian artists. He died on 2 February 1920 in Budapest. Today, Pál Szinyei Merse is remembered as a central figure in Hungarian painting, whose work continues to be admired for his contribution to the development of art in the country.
