The Fortress of La Mota, located in Alcalá la Real, in the province of Jaén, is an impressive medieval construction dating back to the 8th century, during the Muslim period. For centuries, this fortress was an essential strategic point on the border between the kingdoms of Granada and Castile. The monumental complex includes walls, turrets, several gates and the citadel with the Tower of Homage, which stands out with its 20 metre height. Inside is the old Andalusian city, with the remains of a mosque, residential area and market, and the Gothic-Renaissance abbey church of Santa María la Mayor. The fortress was the scene of numerous clashes until it was abandoned in the 18th century. Declared a National Monument in 1913, it now houses the Border Life Interpretation Centre, which allows visitors to learn more about the history and role of this unique place in the defence of Andalusian territory.
