El Rocío is one of the most important religious pilgrimages on the Iberian Peninsula. It takes place every year in Almonte, Huelva, and attracts thousands of devotees who go on pilgrimage to the village of El Rocío, next to the Doñana Natural Park. The tradition dates to the 13th century when, according to legend, an image of the Virgin was found by a hunter. During Pentecost, brotherhoods from all over Andalusia travel on horseback, on foot or in carts, in traditional costumes, chanting songs and prayers. The beautiful village church is the spiritual centre of the celebration and houses the image of the Virgin of Rocío. El Rocío is a moment of faith, culture and joy, where Andalusian tradition manifests itself with unique intensity.
