Edward Henry Potthast was born on 10 June 1857 in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States of America. Recognised for his landscapes and beach scenes, Potthast became one of the main representatives of the American Impressionist style. From a young age, he showed an interest in the arts, studying at the Cincinnati Art School and later at the Julian Academy in Paris.

His works capture the light and atmosphere of the seaside, especially the beaches of New York and New England, using a subdued palette and loose brushstrokes that bring his compositions to life.
