Located in the heart of Granada, Granada Cathedral is an outstanding example of the Spanish Renaissance. Its construction began in 1523 on the remains of the old major mosque and lasted until 1704. The façade, designed by Alonso Cano, is one of the most impressive in the city, with arches and sculptures in high relief. The interior is rich in artistic details, including chapels with paintings and sculptures by local artists. The Cathedral also houses the remains of Alonso Cano and Mariana Pineda, a Spanish liberalist heroine. One of its main attractions is the Royal Chapel, which serves as the pantheon of the Catholic Kings and contains paintings by Alonso Cano.
