Surrounded by greenery and mountains, the construction of the Noudar Castle dates back to 1307, during the reign of D. Dinis, and it was important for the defence of the border with Castile during the 16th century. Located in Barrancos, between the Múrtega stream and the Ardila river, it is surrounded by fertile land and extensive pastures for grazing cattle. The site was chosen for its natural defence, easy access, and the use of a spring of excellent quality water, the Figueira Fountain. Legend has it that inside the castle there is a serpent adorned with braids on its head. This serpent would be an enchanted Moorish princess who only came out at night. It has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.
