It is a medieval castle with a keep and its fortifications, of the bastion type. History tells us that it is likely that Castelo de Vide castle was recaptured from the Arabs by D. Afonso Henriques in 1148, with the granting of a charter in 1180. The importance of this castle led to family conflicts, since D. Afonso III donated it to Prince D. Afonso, an act that was condemned by his brother King Dinis. In 1327, King Afonso IV reinforced the castle’s defences. Under the reign of King Fernando, it was given to the Order of Avis. It has been protected as a National Monument since June 1910.
