The Amoreira Aqueduct in Elvas is a work of considerable size, which stretches from the main water source in underground galleries over a length of 1,367 metres and then to ground level. Arcades that reach a height of more than 30 metres can be seen for more than 5.5 kilometres. Its construction enabled a real evolution in the city by supplying numerous fountains within the walls. The work was directed by Francisco de Arruda who, at the same time, was working on the city’s future Cathedral. The aqueduct was completed in 1622. It has been a National Monument since 1910 and was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012.
